Sticking Out my Neck!
Its almost 20 years ago that a young trainee at Newcastle United was badly injured in a road accident . He broke his neck in 5 places and yet was determined to realise his ambition to become a professional footballer. The young man? Alan Thompson who has joined Hartlepool United on a month's loan to get match fit for Leeds assault in the league title and promotion.
Those fans who castigated Joe Allon for his over the top celebration which I must admit I did not see at Eland Road may well think that Joe had something to do with Alan Thompson coming to the club. Joe certainly didn't do anything wrong during the Boxing Day encounter and I know that for certain because I sat watching him for the entire match.
Alan Thompson has had a colourful career. He moved from St. James Park to Bolton Wanderers where he was promoted twice to the Premier League. He appeared in the 1995 League Cup Final and scored as Bolton lost 2-1 to Liverpool. when Bolton where relegated again he moved to Villa Park where he stayed two years before moving north to Scotland and Celtic.
In 2000 he scored 11 times in 26 games as Celtic won the Premier League title and prompted the Hoops board to give him a contract to 2007. In 2004-5, 44 appearances and ten goals was not a bad return and in 2005-6 he scored 3 times in 19 starts.
Alan moved south to Leeds and when he came on as sub against Pools on Boxing Day significantly that signalled Leeds best spell.
I think the majority of people who saw him play in the 4-3 thriller appreciate that at 33 years of age he still has much skill if a little slower than before.
Pools are releasing four players in Gibb, who I am frankly pleased to see the back of - Ali G - I am told is a comedian - but he certainly didn't make me laugh at all. A great many of his performances were abysmal. I can understand Ian Moore wanting to move nearer his home having covered miles this season myself in search of material for my next book. But I do hope Sweeney stays and doesn't go to Darlo as some punters think.
That of course will leave the way open for new players to come in but for the time being enjoy the skills of Mr. Thompson. He may not be here longer than a month.
Until we meet again wherever you kick your balls - take care. |
